Autorretratos. Mónica Ortuzar
05/10/2015
Mónica Ortuzar has picked herself as the theme of her work pieces since 2007: first in drawings, then in water-colours and oil paintings, producing several series of images that add up to near four hundred self-representations. Her pieces are all small or medium size, and they are all painted from the perspective of her reflection in the mirror. And they all depart from an initial pattern that works as an embedding structure for the heads and the faces.
Standing out in poses, scales and a variety of perspectives on a typically non-narrative background, the artist composes sequences of self-portrait variations, technically akin but revealing different interpretations of the self, as the outcome of a self- observation exercise. However, from both a theoretical and a practical perspective, this implies an attitude of externalization, or, rather, a desire for transference and miscegenation: putting on her own face the face of others.
